State-of-the-art glazing has come to ABDO College, thanks to Buchmann UK which has invested £30,000 in setting up a Briot glazing lab with everything for lens finishing. Buchmann UK has also sponsored an adjacent anatomy lecture suite at Godmersham Park, Kent, ABDO's national training centre.
Providing students and lecturers with the opportunity to put theory into practice, this is the first such lab for ABDO and marks a commitment to expand the courses currently held.
"Some 50% of dispensing optician students come to ABDO and this is a tremendous enhancement for them. Many practices obviously don't have labs and so many of the 500+ students who come here each year haven't been exposed to the process of producing lenses, and they love the opportunity to expand their understanding," said Sue Rose, FBDO, SMC Tech (Level 4), ABDO College Technician.
"We can work out so much from the glazing process, not just the theory but it also helps with the geometric influences of lens cylinder and axis, particularly against the frame choice," she added.
Containing everything for lens finishing, the lab is to be maintained by Buchmann UK which will ensure that the technology remains the latest available from the Briot Alta and B&S workshop equipment ranges.
Explained Barry Dibble, CEO, Buchmann UK: "Enhancing the understanding of dispensing opticians should bring advantages for the whole profession. It is estimated that just under one third of jobs that come into UK optical labs need some degree of checking. This means the labs have to run busy customer service departments, which may be verifying details of the prescription, frame or lens choice. The more that is known about the glazing process and practicalities, the more we can remove that delay."
The laboratory is equipped with the comprehensive Briot Alta edging technology, plus consumables, workshop tooling, frame heater and an ultrasonic cleaner from the B&S range, also supplied in the UK by Buchmann. ABDO College staff have also been trained on the use and day to day maintenance of the equipment.
