EARLY WARNING SIGNS FOR AMD REVEALED
Eating plenty of leafy green vegetables, particularly raw spinach and curly kale, can reduce your chances of developing Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), the leading cause of blindness in over the 50s, believe opticians.
Cutting smoking is also a major factor in protecting yourself against ARMD, which every week causes 300 people in the UK to lose their sight. If you have a family history of ARMD, or would like to know the condition of your macula, and the vital pigment, lutein that protects the retina, an easy test is now available from opticians.
Screening takes just five minutes which your optician can conduct on a macular pigment screener, the Tinsley Mpod, recently designed by researchers David Carden and Dr Ian Murray at the University of Manchester.
ARMD is set to rise significantly with the ageing population and the opportunity for this additional screening is expected to win considerable favour .
"Much as consumers have become aware of their cholesterol levels and the importance of monitoring and controlling them, we expect to see the same levels of awareness developing in relation to the density and absorption spectrum of the macula pigment, the protective pigment within the macular," said Dr Ian Murray.
ARMD was brought to the attention of the public by the BBC's "The Truth About Food" series. Viewers were told that vegetable-rich diets could help to strengthen the pigment that protects the macular.
