Performance now endorsed by leading manufacturer of rimless eyewear
3M™ LEAP™ LSE (Low Surface Energy) edging pads are made of a specially formulated adhesive designed to improve the edging results of today’s new hydrophobic “non-stick”, low surface energy coated lenses. "The 3M™ LEAP™ lens blocking pads brought excellent results - far better than those supplied with some of the specialist coated lenses," said Ricky White, Managing Director of Polaris Optics.
Use of anti-slip foils and lens liners is no longer required, saving valuable time and money.
Designed for Hydrophobic Coatings
3M™ LEAP™ LSE pads are designed to adhere to hydrophobic coatings while maintaining axis stability.
Dual Adhesive System
Each side (front and back) of the 3M™ LEAP™ LSE pad uses a different adhesive.
Guide to Preventing Slippage
The key to edging hydrophobic coated lenses is controlling the variables that lead to slippage. Three main variables exist that have the greatest influence on the edging process:
1. Hydrophobic Coating Consistency
Start with a stable blocking surface: Prior to blocking the lens should always be cleaned with reagent grade isopropyl alcohol to remove hydrophobic coating not tightly adhered to the anti-reflective stack. This will ensure that the pad is adhered to a stable surface.
2. Edging Equipment and Settings
High clamping pressure and slow cutting speed: The clamping pressure should be set to high and the grinding rate set to its slowest level. This is particularly important when grinding polycarbonate and high-minus lenses. Weco edgers have variable settings including a “safe-grinding” mode that is recommended for coated lenses.
3. Edging Pad and Block
Choose the correct edging pad and block: 3M™ LEAP™ LSE pads are designed to adhere direct to hydrophobic coatings while maintaining axis stability. Each side of the pad (front and back) uses a different adhesive. Make sure that the tabbed side of the pad is against the lens.
-
The block radius and lens should be closely matched for optimum adhesion and prevention of gaps between the block and lens where water ingress may occur.
-
Blocks should be completely clean and dry prior to pad application. Blocks that have suffered damage of any kind should be discarded. Weco have produced a new Premium Starblock with properties particularly suitable for use with coated lenses.
